Places to Visit

Vieste is located in the eastern part of the Gargano National Park.
It is characterized by a centre that extends from a historical Castle, built by Frederick II, currently seat of the Navy Air Force and it is an observatory for the weather forecast, up to the rocky peninsula of San Francesco, full of narrow streets, staircases and arches.
For those who want to enjoy the sea in all its splendor, typical are the excursions to the sea caves.
Among the luxuriant nature, the clean and crystalline sea, the coast welcomes to many caves that are a true miracles of nature.
The fishermen had fun to give to the caves very curious names like: smashed cave, bell cave, cave of two eyes, the siren cave, cave of dreams, and so on.
The tourist who loves nature, could not stop making the trip to the Umbra forest in the heart of the Gargano National Park. The forest is thousands years old, and it’s rich of ancient trees.
It is crossed by 14 footpaths, all easily walkable. The information point is the visitor centre near the naturalistic museum. The museum is divided in many sections, one dedicated to the plant life, one dedicated to archaeology and one to wildlife, with over 200 animals living in the park.
At about 60km stands Monte Sant’Angelo, situated 800 meters above sea level, overlooking the entire Gargano, and it offers a breathtaking view.
Its name given by the Archangel Michael appeared there around the fifth century.
The excursion to the Tremiti Islands, between beauty and history, you will discover a corner of Adriatic sea that has no equal.
After the trip to the sea caves and the visit to the San Domino island, the tour goes on to the San Nicola island, considered an open-air museum for the several traces of ancient and glorious past.

Finally, the town of San Giovanni Rotondo, in a beautiful valley at about 600 mt. From the sea level it is a pilgrimage site for the presence of the monastery where Padre Pio lived and received the stigmate.

Among the works of artistic interest in San Giovanni Rotondo, there is the new Padre Pio’s church, built on a design by the great architect Renzo Piano.

He wants to reproduce the look of Padre Pio, a look toward an endless horizon, always ready to welcome needy people.

The new church of Padre Pio, is located in a part of the town not far from the centre and it seems to be projected outside, in a area without geographic boundaries: the space of mercy and faith.

Since the Middle Ages, Gargano was one of the leading religious centres in the world.
During Crusades, Gargano and its shrines were one of the points where more often crossed warriors and pilgrims came from all over Europe.
