I need help returning to the UK with my dog, any clues please

Mandragora

We drove to Italy with our dog which was a success.  I now need to return to England for a month and want to take her back with me.  We have only one car, which my husband needs for work.  Seems air freighting is nigh on impossible, can fly them out but not back, it appears.  Have thought about the across Europe train and ferry across the Channel.

Has anyone got any advice please.

Don't do it ............................ [its only for a month]

By Rail/Ferry it looks one heck of a journey

For dogs on trains in Europe see;-

 http://www.pettravel.com/passports_europetrain.cfm

However to cross the channel [as Eurostar won’t allow dogs on trains], see;-

 http://www.seat61.com/Europe.htm#pets

The journey by rail and ferry is a long one – it would probably pay to do an overnight sleeper from Milan to Paris

 -------------------

 Typical Journey would be;-

23.35 off Milan – arrive Paris [Bercy] at 09.00  [Sleeper train]

 Taxi across Paris

09.58 Paris to Calais Ville, arr 11.40

Taxi to Ferry, and arr Dover [say] 15.00

Train from Dover 15.44 – arrive London St Pancras [not by Eurostar] 16.51

 ----------------------------------------

Me – I’d leave the dog behind – Hubby can look after him, and you’ll save a fortune in fares, and lots less hassle

Question .....................

you say

"Seems air freighting is nigh on impossible, can fly them out but not back, it appears. "

Can you not fly with BA on [say] the Genoa to Gatwick route?

Costs from Euro159 return - and they take pets.

[I'd still leave the pooch with Hubby though]

Have you tried specialist companies like Airpets?  I don't know what they charge these days.

We are currently living in Germany (but want to escape to Italy) and have a dog so I have looked into various travel options.  Lufthansa take dogs on their flights - they charge them as excess baggage per Kg dog weight, so it depends on how big your dog is.  In Germany if the dog in it's travel cage weighs less than 8kg you can take them in the cabin with you free of charge - I don't know if this is just for domestic flights though.

There are fast train links from Italy to Germany and Germany to France (Frankfurt to Paris in around 4.5 hours) and you can get some very good fairs.  Dogs are charged at half adult fair.  They are not allowed on all trains (and not in sleeper cabins as far as I know).

I have a friend who wanted to make a one way trip with a dog from Carcassonne in France to the UK and BA wanted to charge her so much, it was actually cheaper for her to hire a chauffered car to take her door to door via the channel tunnel - cost around €1000 !
