We are thinking of going to Sardinia for a holiday in June and wonder which is the best bit to aim for. Have heard of Costa Esmerelda, any views on it?
I can only comment on the south both west and east of Cagliari are beautiful although we prefer the south-east.Wherever you go Junes a good time not too busy.Let us know what type of holiday your looking for ie beach and rest etc.
The Costa Smeralda is GORGEOUS but accommodation is v. expensive and mainly private villas. If you have the €€€ then the Hotel Calla di Volpe (sp?) is very special. Make sure you go to Rosemary's for dinner.
We went to Golfo degli aranci and loved it. We also loved Alghero... yes, I am faraid, much depends on your budget! But Sardinia is all so beautiful and the food is amazing. And the wine! And the Beer!!
Hire a car and tour round, there's lots to see. We had some great holidays there. Hotel Angedras in Alghero is a nice little hotel for a few nights.i'm sure you'll have a geat time.

We stayed in this place when it first opened in 2006. After reading the recommendations on http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk the hotel has fulfilled its promise. A beautiful new hotel set on a hillside overlooking the lake, in a fabulous, very quiet setting, ideal for exploring the island. If you search around booking sites it seems you can get rooms for £75 per night with b&b for a week's stay - although for their superior chalets with private garden, patio, and lake views, it is considerably more (but worth it).
We were amongst the first guests in 2006 and took our pick of the chalets at something like 50 euros per night! Lucky us!
I have travelled around a lot of Sardinia, and I especially like the NW of the island as it more unspoilt and authentic. The most unspoilt and authentic areas are of course in the interior of the island, but these often do not attract tourists. The coastline between Bosa and Alghero is spectacular and legally protected. Bosa itself is a small working town, not just a resort and has a very special welcoming atmosphere as well as fantastically beautiful countryside and many beaches of different types - not just your classic sandy strand. Wherever you go, do hire a car, as although public transport is inexpensive, it is infrequent, timetabling is confusing if you don't speak Italian (and even if you do!) and does not go to the areas you may wish to explore.
Costa Smeralda is gorgeous, yes, but expensive, and strangely suburban in its built environment. You could be anywhere - it doesn't seem very Sardinian to me.
Thanks for the comments, we found that we were tied with flights to Cagliari from Manchester so have booked into the Flamingo Hotel at Santa Margherita di Pula for three weeks, will hire a car for middle week/ten days. Looking forward to it! Any further tips would be greatly appreciated!
Have now returned from three weeks at Hotel Flamingo which turned out to be a good choice. Used the car to head East, North and West and saw beaches, city, heritage sites but we will remember the holiday mostly for such a relaxing break and fabulous food (though very expensive drinks) at our hotel.
Now I see the significance of your Avatar, Pas55! It is now in our house in various guises!

I totally agree with Tartuffa on her advice. Costs are very high.
