Hi there my fiance and I decided against a reception in a hotel, for our wedding in Sicly, for various reasons one of which was cost but another was a healthy suspicion that such an arrangement in a bog standard European hotel might leave our guests feeling unsure whether they had visited Sicily at all.
So we decided that after the Church we'd invite them back to our humble casa rurale, pitch a tent, crack a bottle of prosecco and go from there. The idea is to let people be amongst the olive trees, cattle bells clanking, rub shoulders with the neighbours on their home patch, feed them rustic food like a lamb on the spit and generally return them home happy and well fed feeling like they got 'something out of' their trip away.
Initial contacts with local catering firms suggest half are booked already and the others just don't 'get' what we're trying to achieve.
Has anyone tried this sort of rustic catering themselves or had experience of such an occasion? How was it achieved?
If we find a roasting spit large enough for a sheep thats part of the battle won (Google.it searches throw up small spits suitable for chickens but little else) - but where to find a catering company that can pull off the rest in a laid back, family style?
Any thoughts on topic would be great...
Regards
Liam

Hi Alan
I'm grateful for the links, I remember as a kid my father doing it back home and its a real crowd pleaser - so I'm keen to have a crack at it. Our only problem is where to find a supplier (who will sell/rent) us such a spit thats in Sicily or even Italy?
Maybe you or someone else reading my post may know of a company that could supply us?
Thanks again
Liam
"SPIEDO GIRARROSTO"
Liam, welcome and congratulations on the forthcoming wedding.
What you are after is what the Italians call an "spiedo girarrosto", however, I have no idea where you can get one in Italy. A catering and restaurant supplier may be able to help.
Anyway, I would advise you to contact a local caterer. Ask around, perhaps at your favourite restaurant, and they will be able to look after you with authentic delicacies.
Best wishes

Hi Ram
We're in the hills about 20 mins drive south from Siracusa - we actually got onto a pasticceria with a good reputation, a bunch of enthusiastic guys and we're waiting on pricing. They reckon that they can sort the girrarosto, no problem so happy days this was beginning to up the stress levels.
Thanks for all the help
