As Julian says, once the ground begins to shake and the rumbling starts, I for one am not thinking how deep it is or even if it is just a small magnitude, I am thinking Oh s**t (its only the depth that varies after all)!! It is only when its over that you can judge how bad it was, not while its happening.

Personally I have found it very frightening and nothing nasty has happened to me. The people near the epicentre must be living on their nerves and must be exhausted.
