Skichi even UK based Tour Operators have to go through a local agent based in Italy.
The big ones such as Thomson, My Travel etc are no exception.
They need to pass their bookings to another TO or travel agent who is based in Italy and who acts on their behalf.
So more costs as a third party is involved.
It all depends on what your insurance will cover you for.
Cover is more for services cancelled by either party or in the case of accident etc.
They don't tend to cover or take part in any problems relating to lack of hot water or poor quality food.
This is where someone local has more weight in that they have usually worked with and have the language skills to discuss and resolve any probems at the source and without long and lengthy insurance companies who very often find it difficult in such cases.
