Given that our house - like many old houses - has walls that are a metre thick and more, this seems to me a daft way of doing things. Hoping to demonstrate how screwed up the figures would be in a real case, I just tallied up the area of our house, both by exterior dimensions and as a total of floor space of each room. Strangely, because approximately half the house has two floors and the remainder only one floor, it works out that the exterior footprint of our place is an area of 232mē while the usuable interior area is 230mē.
However, if you multiply the exterior measurement area of the two-floored area by two, the total goes up to 350mē which is
significantly larger than the interior area.
Still think it's a very odd way of dong things.
