There is a certain logic behind the system; many Italians live in blocks of apartments and measuring property this way allows for an assessment of their size from the outside of the block, without entering to measure each room of each apartment. The gross figure, including walls, is 120% or so of the
calpestabile figure surprisingly often. When you think about it, it's no less accurate than the the way houses are assesed for Council Tax in the UK; by a bloke with a clipboard making an educated guess from the end of the front garden and I find it more a more helpful way of describing houses than the old UK way of saying '3-bedroomed semi' etc..... as if all 3-bedroomed houses were the same size!
