Just to elaborate slightly, the partita IVA is exactly the same as your VAT registration in the UK, The most sensible way for most people to register for IVA is with the help of an Italian accountant - or a "commercialista" as it is called here. They will get your number from the "Agenzia delle Entrate" and will then help you keep on the right side of the law and make sure you make your returns correctly.

However, if it appears on an on-line form it is safe to simply ignore it. Usually they put dots or asterisks to show the fields that you MUST fill in.
