this is a link to an article regarding the new shopping centre ...almost finsihed on the outskirts of Teramo it lists some of the companies that are taking up the units to let and it seems that of the 102 units all have now gone... apart frrom many otheres the ipermarket bit is a leclerc/conad combination of 10,000 sq m the new OVS... they have shortened the spelling is 1600 m sq... and lots of famous names i have never heard of but those in the know will certainly have anyway its good news for Teramo i think... well and those that live close ... basically it being on the outskirts no traffic jams... and once yo get to know your way around you can virtually drop down from the hills and find yourself outside again the link is in italian...sorry ... she does write some stuff in english but not this story i think |

Teramo fits nicely into that equation[size of towns which suffer]Out of town parking with bus services would have been better. Anyway for now all will look rosey, but what of the next decade or two? |

I agree Giovanni, I really hope this is not the trend in Italy it is terrible what has happened to town centres here in England, next thing we know we will be having a coffee in Ikea rather than a nice traditional centre.

a valid concern i agree... however where i have seen other cities here in Italy with these sorts of centres on the outside i have not noticed a marked difference in town centre shopping...
maybe its just an italian thing.. i would say Pescara which has had a huge development of shopping giants out near the airport has still a pretty vibrant city centre... and they have been available there although the numbers are increasing as Pescara grows for quite a while now i think basically for Teramo as they now have installed traffic control barriers into most of the older parts of the city life will get a bit easier in the sense of parking and traffic.... they are almost finished with the work on the bypass to montorio and ascoli roads... which will also relieve things a bit.... the crowded city centres here in Italy often mean dangerous levels of polltion from too much traffic and often cities are closed to traffic for whole days to bring them back within accepted levels... they also have here in Teramo out of city parking spaces with free electric bus services running to the city centre... thats been in place for i think at least the last four years... so they are working on problems in a comprehensive manner the other point is that these shopping centres provide vast amounts of work.. maybe not the best paid... but with their longer opening hours there is also that benefit to the economey.. more earnings will mean more income to spend so everyone benefits.. opportunities for split days and mothers maybe being able to take jobs for the first time to suit school hours... the other big benefit that the shopping centre will help with is beside it... the new football stadium...is there.. here in Teramo whenever a match was due all the streets around the city centre stadium were closed off...the main road had all the traffic diverted ...no parking allowed in the squares.. bars closed in the vicinity of the stadium... so now football days will not create chaos for the city and shops will be able to trade normally... so hopefully that will help to cope with an obvious difference in habits that will arrive with the new shopping centre i very much doubt the traditional city centre life will go here in Teramo, i doubt in any italian city because there is a different mentality ... any sunday or evening here ... you find whole failies strolling in the fresh air...stopping and chatting...sitting at bars and playing cards... its a social italian way of life... which i dont really believe has existed ever in any english city to the same extent |

I think this is a very naive way of looking at things.
If a big out of town shopping centre is opened it is bound affect the town centre shops. If a family goes to the shopping centre and buys their bread there, along with the rest of their shopping, they will not be buying it from the little local bakers anymore. If Mamma is not popping out for the loaf she will not drop into buy some nice peaches she has seen on display outside the little grocers shop etc. etc. The process is only different in Italy because the older Italians are used to shopping on a daily basis for fresh food and at the moment they care more for quality than convenience, but as that generation dies out the youngsters will abandon the city centre shops for the Supermarket and the decline will then be fairly rapid. A lot of money is being poured into Teramo at the moment and the idea of creating a ‘super province’ taking in Teramo and Ascoli Piceno is also being mooted. I don’t expect any of this will happen quickly but without doubt Teramo is going to become more and more urban. As with all things, progress will bring benefits but much will be lost on the way. It may bring an increase in house prices but will it make the quality of life any better? |

In Ascoli Piceno we also hear about the "super province" but I think some of this is related to the current mayors desires for higher office as he is the one who talks about this. I understand that the Ascoli Piceno Provence is no longer included in the economic benefit zone for "mezzogiorno" so there may be some desire to connect with Teramo solely for cash reasons.
There are 3 iper-markets within 15 minutes of the centro here and have been for several years. They are busy but many of the people I talk to prefer the service the "mom & pop shops" offer, and I agree. |

Having family that runs a small shop I'm all in favour of you shopping at small shops. But even the small shop owners go to the supermarkets when it makes sense. |

With the wet weather we have been having the past few days we drove down to see the Gran Sasso today and though I am no fan of malls in any culture I was surprised by how nice this location was. The lay-out is easy to get around, it has a good interior and exterior look and a good mix of shops (though none looked like local places). Based on other Italian malls I have seen this is one of the nicest.
