why marridge certificate has to be at the conculate?

Does anybody can help me here
I recently got married to Italian guy,who lives in London..After our marriage,which took place in non-EU country,we went to the Italian consulate to apply for Italian visa and we were asked to leave original marriage certificate with them.We could not leave it that time since i had to apply for UK visa and they don't accept any copies.Now, I am just wondering why do we need to leave my original ceritifcate with the conculate?Don't we need to have it with us?After comming in uk i will need to extend visa again and will need to provide originals...
