I/We ended up using a local architect, who also doubled up as a project manager. He did the job for 7% of the overall cost, he provided us with a contract which incorperated cost per day for any overun on the project, he used the services of a English woman, who helped us with the language issues. We had to make 3 trips to deal with issues as they arrived, and the project cost increased by 20%, but we did have a lot more work than we originally was quoted for ( new roof, was the main extra cost ) . At the end of the day we are very happy with the outcome, both with what we paid and the workmanship. He sent us pictures of any major changes, and helped above and beyond what he took payment for. I would not hesitate to recomend his services .

I tend to be wary of any quote from any geometra; with experience and subsequent projects here in Italy I have seen actual costs come in at under half the quoted cost of construction by geometras. I have seen suppliers double prices to incorporate geomtras increased fees and so on... be critical, be over zealous and check out prices thoroughly yourself.

When we gutted and renovated an apartment in La Spezia we used an excellent firm called T&T Costruzioni from there 0187 736899, Via del Prione 203 and they do work further afield. If you speak Italian phone Antonio direct on 335 380 518 otherwise phone the office and speak to Andrea. Tell them Sarah & John recommended them. Good luck!

Do they only do building work or do they also have plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc..? We are always interested in finding reliable workmen.
Thanks.

Yes they organised the whole thing, stripped back to the mud & wattle, rewired, redid the floors, bathroom, prepared kitchen. And we got a very detailed quote. Son of the owner is a geometra.
