Default ICI - lower cost for pensioners?

Hi all,
I've been searching for information on a number of subjects now that we are in Italy most of the time and I came across this thread:
http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/property-sales-rental-advice/273-declaring-second-home-italy-italian-tax-authorities.html

In it Cristina mentions that "Many people who are retired for example end up not paying because their catastale is low and the deduction for retirees is higher than the regular."

Has anyone come across a higher detrazione for the retired?

And also from Cristina "As for the garbage, it is based on square meters and the number of people in the property. If you are an infrequent visitor and (non) resident, you can get a discount."

Has anyone come across any discounts for being non resident and/or a two person (pensioner) family in connection with TARSU (rubbish) charges?

There is a higher no tax zone for retired persons versus non-working non-retired. But and it's a big but you need to qualify for the no tax zone. First that means you're a tax resident in Italy. Secondly your income is low enough to not lose the no tax zone tax benefit.

I don't think all towns give breaks for non-residents when it comes to trash. So you need to check with your town.

Thanks NickZ

We are going through the motions of becoming tax payers here and I suspect that (just like the way it works in the UK) our pension income will negate any higher tax zone.

I was more interested in the prospect of some "discounts" against ICI and TARSU for "old folks" - that's us

Default Tarsu

Some comune are offering a 20% reduction in TARSU to single resident occupants over 65. Presumably this means one person households.

not exactley an answer to your question but regerding ICI there is talk at the moment that they are going to either reduce by a lot or even abolish this tax for first home owners...

there are also murmurings... that it might only be for less well off...

basically i believe something will happen in the respect of ICI going away as the Prodi government is in serious troubles as regards its popularity over the tax burden and price rises... they need something to get not only the population back in its support... something like 75 % now would not vote them in again...a record for any government... but also the extremes that tail that generally wags the body of the centre is also making big murmurings as regards not supporting various votes...
all in all i would say a scenario for some sort of tax cut to be announced in the next financial act...or budget..and it looks to be ICI
