Thanks Nick. Is there some way I can find out about TIM plans and coverage and modems before I get to Italy? Preferably, I'd like to be internet secure before I engage with all the other stuff like getting utilities, residenza, a toilet and shower etc. etc.! Funny, isn't it ... our 21st century priorities...

These are the cards: TIM - Navigare da PC

This includes the modems: TIM - Prodotti

Coverage is on this page (click on verifica copertura): TIM - Trova e Risolvi

Currently using a Tim sim (no 3 service near Amandola) with the unlocked USB dongle we bring from the UK , speed varies between 20k and 200k good enough for surfing and emailing but dont try and send any media . On a similar subject we recently had our BT line disconnected back in the UK and use Vodafone Mobile Broadband for internet access (Helsby/Cheshire) we get faster speeds than the BT landline between 4 and 6 Meg, 3 gig/month for £15 , Geoff .

Default Email software with mobile broadband

Well, am still struggling away with tre...managed to get it reconnected, but have just reveived a message that they are planning to suspend it again...anyway. There seems to be a credit card chaos out there.

A question for the technically minded. Has anyone been able to operate their existing email software programme (eg. Eudora, Thunderbird etc) meaning that which you use to download and organise your email on your computer, with Tre mobile broadband...or what they appear to call a "dongle" (fortunately have not heard this name used in Italy). I have found that while I can still retrieve emails there is no way to send them. I have tried everything, read stacks on the internet, looked at tre's info....did anyone find a solution other than paying for their otherwise free email service?

The obvious guess is they are blocking port 25. Are you using their SMTP server? Maybe there is a different one for Italy?

The other option is to setup either a google gmail or a yahoo mail account. Use either to send your mail. I'm not sure off the top of my head with yahoo but google uses a high number port which won't be blocked.

Default tre mobile broadband

I had tried that but must have not completed it properly...now it seems to be working and have made a quite a difference.....although haven't got it perfect yet. gmail certainly has a helpful and clear site. Tre explains that some email providers like yahoo don't provide a free service any more in the case of a mobile broadband, stating that one has to use IMAP (which is not free at gmx). So gmail is the way to go. Thanks again.

I had already been planning to sign up for the Three UK mobile internet package. I'm going to be stiffed for a small fortune by Telecom Italia because I'll be moving and having my line disconnected after less than a year, and mobile broadband will be much cheaper. Anyway, Three UK also offer a range of "Start up" packages, for example, a modem and 12GB of data (more than enough for most people) to use over a year for £150. That may be slightly cheaper and less bother than topping up as you go.

I am going down the 3(UK) route to get telephone/broadband connection at our house in Le Marche. Unfortunately we get a weak mobile signal (I have tried different networks) in most of the house because we live in a rural area. However one corner of the house gets a good signal. Does anyone know how to boost a mobile signal so it can be picked up elsewhere in the house? Alternatively for broadband I have thought of plugging the modem into a wireless router and my laptop will pick up the signal from the router. I know this is a bit technical but perhaps someone has been through this already? Thanks.

You could try an aerial designed for a carkit, but would need a pc connected to your phone in the good coverage area, networked using it as a wireless access point
