Just a bit of hard experience if you have a proper thunderstorm unplug the modem power, the laptop power and if you have a fancy boiler - the boiler and last of all unplug the phone line where it comes in to the house. It really is necessary!

I would recommend you connect ALL electrical appliances such as TV, phone, computer, DVD etc via a surge protector (about 12 euros each from Euronics). This will stop your delicate electrical appliances from any surge in power if some part of the system his struck by lightening or goes out. Basically, the surge protector goes pop first.

Or you can unplug them.
