Default Ancona - Alghero

R'air are introducing a 2x weekly (Fri & Mon) flight from Ancona to Alghero from early June and there are the usual reasonably prcied introductory fares. Having never been to Sardinia, is Alghero itself somewhere to be recommended for a short break ie Fri to Mon, or Mon to Fri? Time and other committments may not allow a longer stay this summer - but we would be keen to have a 'taste' of Sardinia. Local opinion please!

Default Alghero

Hi

We have friends in Le Marche (near Cingoli) and have visited them a few times there. Great news about the Ancona - Alghero flight. It will make this trip really easy now. We are hoping to come over to Le Marche this summer and stay again.

My family are from Alghero and I have been going there for the last 40 years! It is a great place to visit all year round and is good for both beaches and wandering around the old walled town. Sardinia is famous for its beaches and these are all free to go to. There are loads of good restaurants in the old town to choose from (from cheap and cheerful to really expensive) and plenty of bars in nice piazzas. Seafood is particularly good. If you go you should also try the local bottled beer - Ichnusa.

One good thing is that Alghero airport is very near to the old town and a bus goes directly there for 70c only, so there is no long journey from the aiport to the town. It only takes about 15 - 20 mins on the bus or quicker by taxi (€25 ish). There are plenty outside the airport. The old town is mainly pedestrianised but there is a free large car park just by the harbour if you have a hire car.

Please feel free to private message me if you want any other information about Alghero and I can send you some useful links and information... we also have 2 apartments right in the old town that we rent out and I can also let you have this link, if you are interested. One sleeps 4 people (2 bedrooms) and the other is smaller and sleeps 2 - ideal for a couple.

Its a really beautiful old walled town and well worth a visit!

Antonia
