Default Roma centro. A good lunch for €8

I can recommend the lunch at Gusto in Piazza Augusto Imperatore; that's right opposite the mausoleum of Augustus and by the new Ara Pacis building by Meier, so very central.

For €8 you get a good buffet (one plate only, but you can load it up!) and a soft-drink or water. Dolce, coffee and wine are a little extra, but not too steep.
There's also a €7 pizza option. The ambience is pleasant - eat inside or out - but the staff are a little off-hand. Still there's no pressure to wolf your food down and move on so you can linger and enjoy the view.

Please be aware that this was written in March 2007 and fortunes can change quickly in restaurants in touristy places!

Always good to have alternatives to pizza taglio when in Roma for under 10 euro.

We haven't yet had the pleasure of visiting Rome, but it's good to have a recommendation on eating out in a tourist centre, rather than relying on guide books. Grazie!

Da Lucia in Trastevere is a very nice restaurant that's in the heart of the Capital. Its run by a family and Renato who is the third generation, speaks English too. Its much better to eat there in the summer as you will get a table outside in the via Matonato. It's like eating on a stage set. The food is "Local style". The street is a bit out of the way, So you will not get people walking by and just walking in, as you will on the Via della Scala just around the corner.
I think its best to by the bottled wine and not the house wine.
Happy appetite

Default Trastavere ristorante

Just returned from Italy (no, not Rome yet!) Thanks for that - we've added it to the list for the future.

To put it in perspective we pay Euro 6-50 each for our kids school dinners. They eat well but not that well

Also been to "Chianti" next to Trevi fountain.
Good food and very reasonable considering location.
Not dirt cheap but not rip off either
