Default Neighbours

Good neighbours are invaluable, especially in a new country, my view would be that the last thing you suggest to them is to cut down the tree, you must have bought the house knowing that it obscured your view of the mountains?.
I dont much like my neighbours tin sheds, but would not dream of upsetting him by suggesting he "tidies" them up, he has been a huge help to us ,especially when we first moved in, and continues to be so.

Dont mean to sound harsh, but it would be a real shame and a lost opportunity if you alienated them at this early stage, leave any discussion re trees to a much later state in your relationship, and Sebastiano is most probably right and you would not be allowed to cut it down anyway, so "keep face" and let the matter lie.

Part of my work in UK involved mediating between warring neighbours, and once entrenched it is very difficult to resolve differences, so as another member suggested, just smile!

The last thing you want is to suggest the tree is removed and for it to get sick. Even if lighting hits the tree you'll get the blame.
