Default IKEA's plans for new stores in Italy

There had been a rumour, even a mention in the press, that IKEA was planning to open a store near Deruta in Umbria but this now seems unlikely. In today's press, according to an Italian friend, their plans are as follows....

I'm sorry to say that Umbria does not seem to be the spot Ikea has chosen. I just read an article in the paper and their next opening is in Rimini in 2009, they have just opened in Parma and then they are going to do Salerno, a second store in Torino. No mention of Umbria.

Ikea are plannng to open near Perugia 'within three years'. They're negotiating for a site at San Martino in Campo.( A story ran today locally - the discussion at the moment is basically about road infrastructure).

The story (below) from August tells quite a crafty tale: Ikea have already opened up a job offer scheme for working in the new depot, so that's going to make it politically a bit difficult (to say the least...) for the regione or ANAS to scupper the plans. We shall see.
