As you can see five more already today in Aquilano, I can imagine how terrified those poor people are and why so many Italians are sleeping in their cars.

It's not just about the Magnitude of these quakes - it's also about the depth underground where they occur.

The quakes in Aquilano today are all fairly deep quakes - between 8.8 and 11 miles deep - so although things will rock and roll a bit - the rumble should not cause damage. It wont stop people from being scared though.

The quake on the 6th was a high Magnitude and only two miles deep - that's why it played Merry Hell.

As Julian says, once the ground begins to shake and the rumbling starts, I for one am not thinking how deep it is or even if it is just a small magnitude, I am thinking Oh s**t (its only the depth that varies after all)!! It is only when its over that you can judge how bad it was, not while its happening.

Personally I have found it very frightening and nothing nasty has happened to me. The people near the epicentre must be living on their nerves and must be exhausted.
