On September 10, 2002, Switzerland became a full member of the United Nations.
Switzerland also is a member of the following international organizations: World Trade Organization, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, European Free Trade Association, Bank for International Settlements, Council of Europe, and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Switzerland in October 2000 implemented an ordinance to enforce UN sanctions against the Taliban (UNSCR 1267), which it subsequently amended in April 2001 in accord with tighter UN regulations (UNSCR 1333). On May 2, 2002, the Swiss Government eased the sanctions regime in accord with UNSCR 1388 and 1390, lifting the ban on the sale of acetic acid (used in drug production), Afghani Airlines, and Afghani diplomatic representations. The weapons embargo, travel restrictions, and financial sanctions remain in force. The Swiss Government in November 2001 issued an ordinance declaring illegal the terrorist organization al Qaeda as well as possible successor or supporting organizations. More than 200 individuals or companies linked to international terrorism have been blacklisted to have their assets frozen. Thus far, Swiss authorities have blocked about 72 accounts totaling $22.6 million.

Something else which has not been raised is that the Italian mafia families use Swiss bank accounts to launder a lot of their money, and Lugano, being close to the border, is the most heavily frequented Swiss location for depositing Mafia 'profits'.

Lugano, just across the Swiss border from Milan, is notorious as the financial secret bank haven for Italian organized crime families, including the heroin mafia behind the 1980s "Pizza Connection" case. The Banca del Ceresio has been one of the secret Swiss banks identified in the recent Italian political corruption scandals as the repository of bribe funds of several Italian politicians now in prison

Lugano is just north of Italian-Swiss border in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland and is home to many of the banks that offer those wonderful Swiss secret bank accounts. With a population of 30,000 it has 400 banks and trust companies! One estimate is that Italians have an estimated 500 billion Euros in overseas accounts, much of it believed to be in Lugano.
