Wouldn't it be possible to use one of the existing type of chat room thingies on MSN or Yahoo? I know that it is very difficult to monitor chat rooms constantly and they can get a bit "messy" sometimes. It would certainly save on the administrative overhead of running it.

Do you mean setting up a chat room of our own, independent of Italy Mag?

As for monitoring a chat room, I think that is fairly impossible but anyone entering a chat room should know that it can indeed ‘get a bit messy’ and they can not rely on the protection afforded to people on the forum.

A chat room may not be a suitable place for the feint hearted.

Especially as he has been hinting of a revamp in the near future.
I really hope that if a revamp is in the offering - that Ronald makes sure it is kept simple. No fancy features that take ages to load or are difficult to use please. If it aint broke don't fix it!

Hi Nielo.

I can't answer you question, only Nardini can.

Having said that however, if we do go ahead and form a chatroom, independent of IMF, it would obviously be open to anyone to join in and not just IMF members, yes?

No problem as far as I'm concerned, but please correct me if misunderstood your purpose to run this poll i.e wasn't it to ascertain whether IMF is a comminity or not.

IMHO, such a chatroom may give you a 'false' reading. I would like to know what other fellow members think.........and please don't shoot the messenger.

A chat room may not be a suitable place for the feint hearted. You can say that again.

I've never used a chatroom, but if I'm correct it either involves turning up at pre-agreed times to chat with specific people, or just turning up whenever and joining in with whoever else is around (or beating a sharp retreat if the only users around are ones you DON'T want to chat to ...)

I couldn't be bothered with the former, and I'm not sure how workable/appealing the latter would be given the relativly small number of 'active' members and the widely differing times at which they choose to post currently.

Personally, I quite like the 'post at leisure' format & I can't see myself spending much time on a live chat facility - though I dare say I'd suck it & see if it was offered.

Also, (I think this was pointed out in a thread a couple of years ago?) there may be a tendency for most of the interesting stuff to get aired only in the chat room & therefore only amongst the 'regulars' - as the live chat isn't captured for posterity, that may result in less (& less interesting) posts on the IM forum. Whether thats important depends on your own viewpoint, but I guess Italy mag's may be different to the chat users on that front? it's essentially the resource vs. community debate in miniature.

In light of recent events it would be nice if the results of this poll were taken into consideration when the forum is changed.

I really hope that the views expressed here are used as the basis for the changes and it is not just a matter of upgrading to a new piece of software.

A chat room would not appeal at all. For us, the Forum has produced some valuable information. A particular recent example is bank charges. We are researching the info found on the Forum and when we have a result will post details there. (May take a while as the main difficulty is finding a bank/cashpoint machine, within easy reach that offers minimum charges). So the reason to be part of the Forum is to give something back as well as take what is offered. Sharing what we know helps us all and it's entertaining!
