The item below is much more exciting when read in Italian, (which I did this morning in the Corriere della Sera) but the BBC has now picked it up.
A tale of how, with just one pistol, Italians fought off a pirate attack!! BBC NEWS | Africa | Italy ship thwarts pirate attack Somalia, la nave da crociera italiana sfugge ad un attacco di pirati - Corriere della Sera |

It is such a dangerous area that you would think that cruise ships would avoid it. There are many Navy ships from different countries patrolling and literally combing the region but the pirates seem to have the upper hand. They always manage to get a ship under their control and they get huge rewards, although these are not disclosed. This is not the first large ship attacked.

I understand the only way to avoid the pirate zone entirely is to go 'round the Cape of Good Hope. The pirates are using ocean-going mother ships to launch their smaller boats from, so their range is greatly extended.
