my local village of c. 2000 inhabitants has 2 gents hairdressers, 2 beauty salons, 2 florists, a sculptors gallery and a hand made jewellery shop ... but no gym. Something tells me that "la bella figura" round my way is currently attained more via retail therapy than through pumping iron!!

However, gym's are popular in the bigger places & I hope you get some good feedback. If not, it's kind of obvious, but the Italian yellow pages will provide a pretty decent list (if not the personal opinion which I assume you are really looking for). This link to the english version of the Italian yellow pages search for Palestra in the town of Calvi Dell'Umbria shows an example search in my village (confirming our shameful lack of exercise facilities) - just replace the "where" field with any place of interest and you'll get a list of local gyms.

Off now to eat some more pies ...

Great idea. I am looking for a gym myself in central Le Marche. I have been told about a couple but haven't had time to check them out. I will do as soon as I can, probably in July. i will then try to remember to tell you but if you don't hear from me please pm me.
In the meantime if anyone can recommend a gym in the area of Jesi, Moie,Serra dei Conti,Arcevia etc I'd be very grateful.

Welcome; from what I'd seen so far, gyms (outside the large metropolis) are focussed more on pumping iron, than machines and "toning"......or am I wrong?

Default Gym Umbria Marsciano

Hi, there is a gym in Marsciano in Umbria, which I looked at a while back, you needed a doctors certificate to use it. I have not yet got around to getting one. Although not brilliant it does have running, step machines etc. and is quite airy. I run to keep fit, plus, sad person that I am use fitness tapes when the weather is bad. However, am thinking of joining this gym as I like to ring the changes.

I Also play tennis (not very well) but need to find partner(s) and also somewhere to play.

Hope this is of some help

Nicola

There is a gym just down the road from us, just before you get to Piano de Montegiorgio, and they do lots of alternativeish stuff as well, pilates and suchlike, we went to have a look and decided that there was enough exercise with 2 acres and all the rest. But it is popular and our Italian friend goes there 3 nights a week after her office job, So I think younger Italians are very keen on the idea, having said that there were very much older people there, one of whom we were convinced had shrugged off this moral coil. I think now doctors are suggesting this is a good thing, and anything for good health here is embraced.
