Default Liguria

Hi All, have just found this site. I have a house in Liguria, near Arma di Taggia and am slowly relocating from Northumberland. Would be interested in talking to anyone in the area. I also need to know what to buy, and where, to be able to access the internet from my laptop. I do not have a land line at my house.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
Peter

Default Hello

We're not so far away... there's been a lot of discussion about mobile internet recently, some favour using 3 - if you are covered and others using a pre-pay monthly plan with TIM they also sell usb modems. All the links are in the posts so happy browsing.

For mobile internet, this was the most recent thread: http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/cos...broadband.html, See also the 'Sticky' on GPRS and EDGE.

As for shops, we don't do much shopping in your area, so might'nt be able to help too much. About the only place we very occasionally go to is the retail park behind Taggia-Arma train station - which has what may be the biggest electrical equipment supplier and the biggest DIY warehouse for many many miles. But I expect you've already discovered that!

My friends have a place in Triora they swear by this:
TIM - Maxxi Alice 100 Prepagati
It is PAYG internet access and works well in the whole of your area. Go to the TIM shop in Arma and ask. I would take a print-out along too.

Thank you sounds exectly what I need, TIM is the only signal I can get at my house, (it is in the Oxentina valley).I have a 3 phone which is very cheap to use from Italy but I have to Drive into Taggia before I can get a signal.
I haven't noticed a TIM shop in Arma..........can you tell me where it is?

Also is there anywhere that sell cheap (Ikeaish) furniture? I am ferrying stuff out at the moment as all the local stuff seems so expensive, but I need to buy another bed and it's not really practical to bring mattresses.

You can buy it in Euronics. But if I were you I would buy it from the phone shop, There is a guy in there who is really helpful setting up & can will help you generate your password, so take your laptop with you. I am told that the shop is on the left on the road toward the public beach, before the piazza. And the nearest parking is the station!

I don't really know the area but I remember there are a couple of big department stores in Genova. There is also an Ikea IKEA | IKEA Genova Perhaps a posting under "furniture required" will elicit some other suggestions.

There is Asta dell Mobile in Arma - much advertised in the area - has a range of styles - don't know how much is available immediately. I believe there are a couple of large places in Albegna (Mondo Convenienza) and if you go in the other direction there are BUT and FLY in Menton and Conforama in La Trinite area Nice. The Genova IKEA is a rather nice shop it seems to have more style and splash than the English ones. The staff are also most helpful. On the other hand there are bed manufacturers - two on the lefthand side on the road from Ventimiglia to Camporosso shortly after the roundabout - both have small showrooms. Recommend the TIM package we use the 9gb maxi webtime one at €25 per 30 days.

Thanks, have tried the Asta Mobile, very fussy furniture not realy suitable for our rural house, and the prices!!!!! Will definitely try your other suggestions though.
How much do TIM charge for ther mobile modem? Have you had problems with clashes if you already have a wireless setup for another server? We've had problems in England trying to get my wife's laptop which is used on her school wireless network to also work on our AOL one at home. Don't know if this is a normal problem or just something silly we've done.

You can look onlline at but.fr conforama.fr and fly.fr to see if its the kind of thing you're interested in - it'll save travelling. On modems follow the links in the posts I mentioned you'll find Bosco puts links to all of this in his posts. No idea about your preferences set up - I'm a Mac user and it intelligently switches automatically from home network to use on mobile modem. You'll have to try it and see.

Hi there, I am also slowly moving over to Italy but much further south to you in the Cassino region (beteen Rome and Naples). My husband has already gone there to live, I just have to sell my business and then I will be over there permanently as well. Rather than live near you in Italy, I live near you in the UK as I am in County Durham on the border of Northumberland. Where are you exactly.
We bought furniture from a local furniture shop called Valentino Corsi. It was amazing how much discount on fabulous furniture we got compared to the advertised and high prices. Also it turns out he exports to Scotland and delivers there every month or so, so for £400 he carried most of our stuff back to Italy for us, diverting off the A1 at Durham.
We have a laptop over there and run it from a mobile phone on TIM. It is slow but works. Just basic internet not broadband. We haven't got a landline in yet.
As I type this I look out to beautiful rolling hills but I am afraid County Durham cannot compete with the mountains all around my Italian home.
Best of luck
maralyn
