I dunno - I kind of get a feeling for the people in the bar who sell bottles with a portrait of Il Duce. Horses for courses - and cannot we tolerate these opinions these days? I do not feel the need to advocate asassination of those who sank the Belgrano - do you?

Real ignorance resides with the individual who makes an assertion like this and then refuses to offer any evidence to substantiate it.

No Neil, that is not true. I've only just seen the post from Lombardia requesting clarification in this thread. I've to attend an appointment within one hour, so, with a forty five minute drive and a need not to be late, I can only provide a very short response.
In a nutshell, Lombardia has been answered elsewhere on the forum, by many more people in many more threads than only this one. I'm sorry if this doesn't satisfy your annoyance, but it's all I have time for just now. Thanks. |

The fact is I am not ignorant of fascism and Nazism, as I have studied both, especially the Nazi regime and Hitler a lot, and the second World War is a subject of great interest to me. |

I think Lombardia deserves a bit of support. I for one agree that people on this forum who more or less without exception love Italy should be made aware of its blacker side. I have heard racist comments while in Italy but not yet thankfully fascist ones though they can't be far away.
I don't know but my guess would be that fascism is more prevalent in the extreme north and south but is it also found in Umbria and le Marche? |

I have however noticed the occasional instance of - mainly unconscious - racism: The locals in my rural area tend to view any eastern European immigrants/migrant workers as likely criminals until proven otherwise - whereas the Western Europeans are greeted with open arms. While I'm sure there's the odd Albanian etc. who fits the bill, I'm sure this is mainly just instinctive insular/protectionist thinking, as economic migrants start taking jobs or undercutting local tradesmen. Pretty similar reaction to that in the UK after the immigration of carribean/asians in the 60/70's? They were willing to do the kind of low paid work that the locals didn't want, but they were wrongly accused of "coming over here and stealing our jobs" nonetheless.

I bought the Mussolini bottle for a laugh! Of course facism isnt funny, but the nature of these bottle is for humour, stopped short of the hitler bottles though.
Real facism (not mere bottles of wine) is another thing as is the mafia, the two being linked since the beginning of Italy's republic.

Though of course it was the Americans who boosted the mafia after the Armistice. Par for the course - look at all the ex-Nazis who continued to run German companies after the War. And if we hadn't kicked out all the Baathists we might have something approaching a functioning administration in Iraq.
Pacts with the devil seem to be a fact of life BTW - lombardia - don't agree with your style but don't see why you should be under attack on this one. |
