I don't know if Canada was officially informed, but I can't imagine that these people entered without being monitored by the RCMP. During WWII all Italian immigrants were regarded with suspicion in Canada and I suspect habits die hard, so they would be treated with suspicion after the war as would new arrivals.

In a strange twist of fate, the viillage where I live in the UK was the site of an Italian PoW camp. Many of my neighbours are of Italian descent in consequence, and Carluccio lives just down the road.
