I obtained a Carta D'Identita from my Comune which shows my birthplace as "Ohio" which is the place of birth shown on my USA Passport ( no city ). My passport has always been my primary identification in Italy including in obtaining my Permesso di Soggiorno - which does show my place of birth as "Toledo". To take the test for my Patente, the Ufficio Motorizzazione Civile di Macerata requires the place of birth to be indicated on the Carta D'Identita. However, the Comune can only accept the information on the passport and is unable to add the city of birth. The only suggestion has been for me to retrieve my original birth certificate from the USA ( I have only a copy ), have it translated and notorized.

I am curious if others have had this problem or whether it is a position specific to this particular provincial motor vehicle office.

Have you tried taking the Permesso di Soggiorno (even if it is out of date) into the Comune, and asking them to issue you a new Carta showing Toledo? I would have thought (especially since you are ex-communitari) that the Comune should defer to the earlier decision by the Questura on this issue. Argue it, and good luck (for the driving test...!)

I would just take your original (untranslated) birth certificate - together with a copy - to the driving school. Show it to them and say that is the only document you have from the USA that has/requires the full details.

They should hopefully accept the copy as proof for their files. They are not as 'worldly wise' as the "Jobsworths" in the Questure and Comunes, so you just might get away with it. Worth a try at least!

If they insist on a translation, scan the BC, PM a copy to me and I'll do one (free) for you that they 'should' accept...

My US passport shows my state of birth only, my visa shows nothing, my PdiS shows the city of birth and my carta also shows city of birth.

When I got my first carta di residenza they had the birth date wrong so I went back a couple weeks later and showed them my PdiS (I have the card) with the correct date and they corrected it for free. I would suggest you show them you PdiS only for a correct carta di residenza. You do need the carta di residenza for getting your patente so unfortunately I think you will need to keep pushing at the anagrafe until you get the correct response.

When we applied for our residenza we had to have original birth cert and have it translated and appostilized (?) before they would process our residenza.

If you have a birth certificate with the place of birth on it that might work. You will probably have to translate it.

I think it would be better to show both the original certificate and the translated one attached on it. this helps having no misunderstandings about what is written on.
From my experience abroad I can tell you that a translated document is fundamental even among the EU's countries.
You can ask for an official translation to the Court of the Comune where you live at present.

Are you referring to asseveramento at the Tribunale?
