Hi has anyone any experience of changing a UK registered vehicle to an Italian registered vehicle? Or do you know if Italian car dealers will buy a UK registered vehicle in part exchange?

This is a link to a recent thread on this subject (posts 5 and onwards)
http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/pro...r-italy-2.html I do not think you will get an Italian garage to accept a rhd UK car in part exchange: although there is no harm in enquiring! |

when I replace my car, I'm going to buy a brand new LHD car in the UK insure it in the UK, that gives me three years before it needs a M.O.T and just SORN it when I'm in the UK. I forgot the fine for not taxing it over the winter while I was in the UK ![]() |

We were offered E1500 on my old cavalier against a new Fiat value E17000, we did'nt do it as happens but we were told by other garages that they would px a rhd car against a new car not a s/h car.

There is a 4wd and classic place near me that has done in the past but only because they are in the business of exporting and importing specialist vehicles so are to the procedure (having said that, they still export classics to the UK but have given up on imports as they find the Italian end too much hassle)
However there is a small but bouyant market for lhds in the UK with prices ok on the whole. You could try someone like Chesham LHD and others

my car's neither a 4WD nor a classic, so doesn't really qualify.
I've had quotes from the UK LHD dealers on what they would give me for the car, but I would like to avoid returning to the UK with it if I can. We may be best advised to keep it and put it on Italian plates. If we do, we'll have to try to avoid the swingeing Italian insurance costs by exploiting your suggestions on expat insurance. But that depends in turn on whether we can register it in my name without me having to have residence... |

Maybe then run an ad somewhere to sell it to an expat, it is the kind of thing I would go for
If you rereg it, you should not need residence legally but who knows when you get into it (a savvy car dealer is a different animal from an unhelpful civil servant). Whether yo rereg it or not, the expat insurers still do cover.

if I leave it on UK plates, which would be the easiest thing to do, I'll still have to go back to the UK to mot it because otherwise I won't be able to renew the road tax. Or am I missing something?

there are people who dont bother because they never take them to the UK, insurers will insure you just the same as long as you keep the car maintained
I do not have a UK reg car so am not in this position
