Default Filling in Italian Self-Assessment Tax Return Nothing to Declare !

I read that I will need to fill this in even though I will have nothing to declare being non-resident and not letting out flat. Anyone else dealt with this matter or do you employ someone to do it on your behalf

I know I shouldn't believe all that I read on the net but apparently if I don't fill the form in like pronto annually even though I have nothing to declare the flat will be taken away from me by the authorities subito !! Any thoughts?

As always, thank you all heaps for any replies

Didn't the last budget remove the home break for non-residents?

How is it a break if there is nothing to declare? The tax treaties exist partly to simplify rather straightforward issues like this. In the worst case, if you were not from a treaty country (and you are, GB has the most treaties) the worst I can imagine is a minor infringement if anyone got around to it.

However if you absolutely must be sure take advice and help make accountants (like me) rich. However as I used to say to a lawyer I dealt with in Belgium, 'thats what it says we must do, but how much of that in reality must we actually do' and a Tax Director in Washington who would say, 'dont tell what I must do first, tell me what the consequences of me not doing it are and the chance of getting caught'

I'm going by memory and I'm too lazy to search for it

But there is an "earned" income amount equal to the economic rent of the home. At least that's what I remember.

That does sound like a non-treaty country provision and not uncommon. For example I doubt Zambia has a tax treaty with Italy.

Turning to another Treaty (that of Rome) that we love to hate, it would be deemed prejudicial under that one

There is an obligation to declare, and pay, the IRPEF on a non-principal residence, and this involves filling in the form. I do not think that this has fundamentally altered in recent times.

What was changed last year was non-residents lost any and all tax breaks. Before the amount would likely have been less then the no-tax zone.

Soooooooo- and if you can speak very slowly and clearly I would appreciate it-do non resident owners of second homes in Italy have to submit tax returns and if so where do they get them from.

Remember "SLOWLY AND CLEARLY"

cheers
