Question Self.drive van hire - Transport - Italy - UK

Hello,

I am looking into the merits of booking a large selfdrive van to bring some furniture over from the UK. I have used Amico Blu in La Spezia before but it appears cheaper to book in the UK (Yellohire do a large Luton type box van at around £60 per day) - even taking into account cheap flights. Is anyone doing this regularly? I have a full load from the UK but an empty van going to the UK. Is there such a thing as a one way one hire? I am looking at doing this at the end of July and based in North Tuscany near Aulla. Advice on best way to do this would be helpful.

Thanks

Jem Hunt

Hi

We also looked into hiring a van to drive down to le marche but it proved too expensive - don't forget that the hire rates quoted in the Uk don't usually cover you for taking the van abroad & so you need to add that on. There is unlikely to be one way hire due to the Uk being right hand drive. You r best bet is to find someone who has an empty van going back to Italy but on the forum it seems to be all people taking stuff to Italy & coming back empty. If you do find a solution I'd be interested.

Chris

Default Self-drive removals to Sulmona, Abruzzo

Just back from dropping off the tail-lift Transit I hired in Dorset. It cost £370 for a five day hire, all-inclusive. Add on £150 for a return crossing with Eurotunnel*, then it's just fuel and tolls. Fed up with the latter in France, (much more expensive than in Italy) I took the rural route on the way back without too much hassle. I'd done the same thing with a 7.5 ton tail-lift Mercedes truck in Feb. and learned a few tips, which made the second run a lot easier. (*Eurotunnel are very flexible - I turned up late for the outward journey and early for the return trip and they didn't bat an eyelid, which was handy as I had booked nearly the cheapest tariffs. It's so fast, you end up in England half an hour before you left Calais, if you see what I mean...)

We had a whole load of furniture and personal items brought out to our house in Picinisco (between Rome and Naples) by Valentino Corsi who is the owner of a furniture store in Atina. He drives once a month to Scotland, via Dover and upwards and comes back to Italy with an empty van. We had bought some furniture from him and negotiated £400 for the whole trip, ie pick up from Durham and delivery to our house in Italy. He started at £500 so only beat him down £100, but £100 is £100!!!

We will be using him again when we move over again. He said if anyone needed anything picked up for delivery in Italy then give them his details. He speaks very little English and our Italian was zilch then but we got on fine.
