I too can recommend Hotel Pignatelli . when I llived in Naples I put all my friends and family there. Central and convenient.. Also Neapolis is fine on Via Tribunale the road parallel to Spaccanapoli.

Late suggestion for Naples
Sorry, I have come late to this thread. But anyone wanting a pleasant and cheap hotel in Napoli's centro storico could try Il Convento (Hotel in Napoli Hotel Napoli Hotels in Napoli Hotels Napoli Accommodation Napoli Accommodation in Napoli) . You can even use Skype to book it. We've found it very pleasant and reliable, and so have a number of friends.
