LATEST UPDATE FOR FOOD DONATIONS:
For those of us living in the Amandola area, we have been to Conad in Amandola and still waiting for them to get back to us with regards to a collection for food donations. In the meantime, we have been to Conad in Comunanza and they have been really helpful, setting up a donation area and translation our poster into Italian! So any non-perishable food items greatfully received at Comunanza Conad until 6pm Thursday 9th April. The donations will then be taken by us to Macerata tomorrow night and then on to L'Aquila. Please tell everyone you know living in the area, every little helps. I will keep you posted with regards to Amandola Conad. For any more information you can pm us. Thank you. |

I for one can understand why the people of L’Aquila are reluctant to return to their homes even after the authorities have declared them ‘safe’. There are now fears of disease spreading quickly through the Tendopoli, especially as most of the people there are elderly (mostly the young went to the Hotels at the coast) and the community is closely packed and eat communally. This makes it difficult to control an outbreak of any infection amongst such a vulnerable group. A case of TB has been reported as well as many cases of diarrhoea. The Authorities are also taking measures to contain the problem of vermin, with rats and mice leaving the deserted and abandoned city and village centres in search of food. I know that other things are making the news on this forum and the fundraising initiative (which was spectacular and something to be proud of) has fizzled out. But I really hope that in the weeks and months to come, people who love Italy will not forget the poor souls up in L’Aquila, while they enjoy all the other things Italy has to offer. |

I am sure that the organisations involved in helping the victims will continue their commendable work for a long time. Health problems were to be expected, these always happen whenever people are forced to live in these conditions. Fortunately, nowadays there are ways to combat these problems, but it all adds up the the precarious situation of these people. I do know that both the Italian Red Cross and Caritas, which are the two main organisations working on site, plan to stay there for a very long time, until they are no longer needed. And let's hope that this will be as soon as possible, as it will mean that the victims are going back to a normal life.... well, as normal as it can be expected under the circumstances.

You will be pleased to hear Neilo that the Marche Chapter hasnt fizzled out with its fund raising, we have just been deciding what we will do next and are having a get together and meeting on Sunday after which we will be letting everyone know what comes next. Hope to get lots of support, from friends on the forum, and also hoping that we make lots more money, for us I think we see this as a long term project, we dont want the victims of the eathquake forgotten even though now for many it is "old news".

I read last night that there's a "Corale Per Il Popolo D'Abruzzo" on June 20th, Rome. So no in Italy the appeals continue.
People there I understand are still in shock and still understandably frightened. Festas and Sagre are low keyed at the moment. Churches are badly damaged internally and closed for reconstruction that will take five years to reopen so religious processions minimal.. Religious ceremonies like masses, weddings etc cannot take place. Church bells are silent. |

This may be true in the centres of the earthquake devastation, but then again there is no one there to go to church or have a festa, they are all in Tent cities or with relatives, friends or in hotels along the coast. In other unaffected parts of Abruzzo, which is a huge region, there are plenty of festas and fireworks and lots of fundraising to help their fellow citizens. Jarno Trulli was in Onna yesterday and he is promoting his Abruzzo nell cuore fundraising initiative. I hope people reading your post don’t think that what you say applies to the whole of Abruzzo, the vast majority of Abruzzo is ready, willing and able to welcome visitors and will be celebrating Sagre and Feste as normal. In fact the Abruzzo area will be welcoming the sporting teams and associated journalists, media etc from 23 countries for the impending Mediterranean Games. So while we must not forget those who suffer in L’Aquila we should also not forget those struggling to make a living in other parts of the region. |
