Default L’Aquila Earthquakes

Over the last few days there have been a series of earthquakes, epicentre just to the South West of L’Aquila. The strongest at 2.6 on the Richter scale was recoded yesterday at 06:08 UTC.

No reports of damage but there were three quakes yesterday.

All a bit worrying for folk with property there.

Default Small earthquake, no-one injured...

Just in case this thread has worried anyone, the Richter scale defines this sort of tremor in the following way:

'2.0-2.9 Minor Generally not felt, but recorded. About 1,000 per day'

The Aquilino area has been having minor twitches for a couple of months now, to the south east as well as to the south west of L'Aquila. As far as I'm aware no-one in the province is unduly concerned. Here in Sulmona, some way in the south of the province, we were more worried today by the fierce winds that roared across and up the valley. It was driving the snow horizontally at one stage. All peaceful now though...

Does anyone know the extent of damage in Villa Sant Angelo and Fossa?

Fossa I understand suffered greatly. One member on another Forum lost her new house there. My best wishes go out to her.

Default This is an old thread

about a previous small tremor. The other three current threads on this subject are to be found fairly easily, we probably don't need a fourth...

Actually, barn-elms, I could not disagree more about this particular thread being irrelevant.

Nielo posted about tremors in February. Myself, having lived through the swarm of pre-shocks in Umbria (in 1997), followed by the biggie, it was like a re-run. So - just like the 'awfully clever physicist' at the Gran Sasso lab - after reading Nielo's post back in Feb, I thought yeah, they are going to get a biggie, soon.

But (and this in respect of the imbecilic press comments that 'they didn't listen to this chap's warnings') after reading Nielo's first postings I deduced that there was probably going to be a siginficant seismic event. Could I predict that it would happen at 3am Monday? No way. I could have predicted that likely it would occur in the next two months - so you want to spend 60 days sleeping in the park?

The idea that you can predict earthquakes with a 'socially relevant' degree of accuracy is false (given the current state of knowledge). But for you to sniffily dictate that Nielo's early warning comments are irrelevant in the context of a big quake happening (happened) I find really rather offensive. Like Nielo is just a simpleton, and should shut up in the face of greater authorities? Perlease. Get real - Nielo was giving still relevant information, just maybe you didn't interpret it correctly?

You're away with the fairies, old chap. Moxie accidentally posted her Le Marche condolences in this thread and has PMed me to explain, Sally then piled in as she has done in the other three threads.

There is nothing in my post that says that this thread is irrelevant (read the thing properly) let alone sniffily. At the time it was an interesting short thread with, as it happens, some predictive qualities

If you choose to be offended that is your choice, you seem to be a strange cove, but rather than trying to stir things up with Nielo whose posts and threads I continue to respect and admire, you should perhaps post your observations on one of the other three, current, threads. Failing that, perhaps you ought to return to counting your doorknockers.
