Default Broadband Roll Out in Tuscany

Banda Larga

This is a link to a website giving the dates for broadband roll out in Tuscany. If it's correct I only have to wait until November to take up residency (and work from Italy) Hooray!

Broadband seems to be very hit and miss as to where it is at the moment.
We have it here in Arezzo but just 5 miles down south towards Cortona, the Valdichiana - not yet.

Our experience is that, even when you do have a broadband connection, the quality of service is also very hit and miss. Our ADSL connection is supposed to be 512K and sometimes it is just that, but often download speeds fall away to something worse than I was used to in the bad old days of dial-up connections charged at a per-minute rate.

Still, I'm mainly surprised that we can get any sort of ADSL at all, living as we do on the top of a hill in the middle of the Abruzzo countryside. Can't really complain too much when our connection speeds fall away to diddly-squat when all the local kiddies start downloading their tunes or videos or porn or whatever it is that clogs up the bandwidth and ruins my statistics when I'm doing my best to create mayhem and carnage in an on-line game.

I'll only need it for emails so not really bothered about the speed - however, my OH is muttering about Slingbox/Sky/Apple TV - so he might get a tad frustrated!

Having said that - I now have to find out how I order it for November (where there's a will there's a way...)

Thanks Jinty.

At least this gives me something to measure "their" failure against

September 2009 - up in the hills here.

In our case, we can't get it, but our neighbours 5 yards away has it! And they're not coming up with any reasonable explanation despite frequent asking

In that situation – and assuming the connection speeds your neighbours are getting are reasonable – I'd be talking to them about possibly sharing the connection and the cost of it.

If they're really that close, it's likely you could use a WiFi connection from their router and so you wouldn't even need to run any wires.
