Default roma ciampino

its all very nice to have Pecara airport in the region...there is even talk of l'aquila developing its old airport but in all honesty i think it unlikely... Pescara although not the regional capital is basically the most convenient and well supported of the cities in the region....

however despite plans to expand that place... in fact its not called pescara airport officially but .. abruzzo airport to save bruised egos in the capital... it will all take time...

in my mind one of the problems in many areas... is that you are limited for choice over airlines and frequency... and most of all having to get to stanstead if you live outside of the north london home counties area...

we are fortunate i guess in that respect ... we have the budget airline airport of rome just down the road... its aprox 140 km from our house...i give the distance because people have different ideas on motorway driving practices ... but in general we can pick up friends and be back home in around three hours... providing they dont carry baggage and the plane is on time...

anyway so as not to get into arguments or discussions on motorway driving practice... its an easy drive from there to the teramo area anyway... and pescara isnt that much further... we have this tunnel that lets you drive through the appenines ...about 11km long ... all autostrada... which really makes life that much easier... the airport is situated about five to ten minutes around the gra from the A24/A25 turning and as a choice of say driving from the south west to stanstead and picking up the pesacar only flight i think its wrth thinking of say the bristol rome... or i guess even better for those that live in the midlands and north there are several flights a day from there too...

i know ... before someone else says it...that lazio has a lot to offer incuding this airport... i agree... but for those of you planning to visit or have homes in abruzzo then dont get all in a panic about pescara...you do have an easy alternative route

and in the spiirt of supporting public transport... there are express bus routes from rome to virtually all the main places here... very few locals use the train option as it generally takes longer than the bus and can be fairly unreliable... although the journey is i belive somewhat remarkable in the scenery sense... but then again the bus one isnt that bad either...

a link to the departures table... hopefully

oh yes and dont get mixed up with the other rome airport...its a nightmare if you arrive there and you then have to drive miles around rome... apart from the place being a total mess anyway

Very useful information Adriatica.

We are very lucky in Abruzzo because we not only have Pescara and Ciampino within easy distance but Ancona is not a bad drive either. With the choice of 3 airports it really makes it an easy place to get to and from.

From an operational point of view, this is not likely to happen John...far too many mountains in the way.

Info about the flights into Abruzzo have been really useful but a bit confusing. I am going out to Abruzzo the first week of April, staying in Sulmona. I was thinking of flying into Pescara and hiring a car and driving to Sulmona - would Rome Ciampino and car hire from there be better? Suggestions would be very appreciated.

Default Rome v Pescara

I would guess it would take about an hour more to drive from Rome to Sulmona than from Pescara, I would imagine it's also quicker getting out the airport at Pescara, one of you wait for luggage the other get the car sorted.
I believe that the deciding factor would be where you live in the UK, how close are you to Stansted or does your closest airport go to Rome. My sister lives in Dorset and it is easier for her to fly from Bristol to Rome rather than drive to Stansted.
Hope this helps
