On 19 March, the feast day of San Giuseppe, Italians celebrate St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus and all fathers across the country—it’s Italian Father’s Day.
The day of San Giuseppe is celebrated by Catholics throughout the world, but especially in Sicily. During the Middle Ages, St. Joseph saved the island from famine by providing fava beans, which play a large part in celebrations particularly in southern Italy.
Another integral part of the Festa di San Giuseppe are zeppole, delicious pastries that range from cream puffs to pockets of fried dough depending on what part of the country you’re in. The most common zeppole, and those most commonly found in Italian communities outside of Italy, are cream puffs; you’ll also see them around the Festa di San Gennaro.
What follows are some videos about the making of zeppole, so brew an espresso, sit back, and enjoy!
And don’t forget to pass along “auguri” to the fathers you know on 19 March!
Have you had or made zeppole? What were they like?
Zeppole di San Giuseppe
I'm eating one RIGHT now. What's it like? Delicious!
Mmmmm enjoy!
I hope you got a chance to enjoy even another zeppole Karen...for those who weren't so lucky today ;)
Zeppole
I enjoyed this so much. Not as much as actually eating one however!
Much love for you on Love Thursday.
Aw, thanks!
So glad you enjoyed the post and video as well :)
Hooray for zeppole!
Thank you both for your wonderful comments...I hope you find some great zeppole this St. Joseph's Day and always :)
San Giuseppe & le Zeppole
Great video clip! I much enjoyed watching it! However I fear the calorie count of one of the featured "zeppole" must run into a few hundred kcals! Certainly not too good for those of us who wish to minimise the "pancia", that was I think mentioned in passing in the video. Pity they can't be made to be just as tasty but without all those calories!
Saluti a tutti at Italy mag! Keep the articles coming, as they are always excellent and entertaining too.
