Restored stone home in Sant’Angelo di Pontano, Le Marche

Words by Carla Passino

Lovingly renovated in vernacular style, this two-bedroom home with pool just outside Sant’Angelo da Pontano is great value at €325,000.

Sant’Angelo in Pontano is a place of reds and greens. The dull terracotta hue of the bricks used for so many of the village houses; the carnelian of shutters and doors; the maroon of roof tiles; and the vivid crimson of poppies, bright against the emerald, olive and myrtle shades of the surrounding countryside.

This riot of colours matches the liveliness of village life. Even though Sant’Angelo only has 1,500 residents, it can count on shops and restaurants, a theatre, an annual bird fair, a hundred-year-long shooting sports tradition, and even its own saint—San Nicola da Tolentino was born in Sant’Angelo in 1245, even though he got named after the town where he died in 1305.

It is here, on a hillside just outside the village, that Magic Marche are selling a postcard-pretty stone home.
Set at the end of a council maintained strada bianca and bordered by thick woods, the house has a strong vernacular flavour. A wooden door and shutters open on the golden stone façade, affording glimpses of carefully restored interiors.
On the ground floor, the country-style kitchen has thick wooden beams and a terrace flooded by the morning sun. On the first floor, the pretty living room has exposed timbers, a chimney for a wood-burning stove, and windows framing panoramic views of the hills and village of Penna San Giovanni. There is also a large terrace which is perfect for alfresco dining. Two charmingly rustic bedrooms with sloping wooden ceilings and traditional tiles take up the top floor.

Outside there is a swimming pool, which is set in a private, panoramic, terracotta-tiled terrace overlooking the hills and mountains of the Macerata province.

Magic Marche are seeking offers of €325,000 and “this price represents fantastic value, for a fully, and authentically, restored two-bedroom house with pool,” says selling agent Jane Smith. “The location is private, the nearest small town has all essential amenities and the house ticks every box in terms of comfort. Plus it only has a modest amount of land, so you have no worries about how to maintain it in your absence.”

The property, adds Smith, “has also been successfully rented for the summer season for a number of years, so your mortgage outlay could be more than compensated for with the rental income.”

The house is gorgeous! I wish

The house is gorgeous! I wish you shared some images of that swimming pool, I imagine is has a pretty special look that fits the stone house. Mine has a pool filter b to keep the water clean, what cleaning system does this pull use? All in all the house is beautiful and I am hoping I will afford getting a house like this in the future.
