Maria was certain that what she saw the 18th night in the skies of Acarenza was something out of the ordinary. A light that moved about in sudden movements and with high speed.

While last June UFO sightings in Basilicata where dismissed as meteorites this time round, Maria Lucia Pietragalla is very sure this was not a meteorite.

She told the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno (a newspaper of the South of Italy) that she was sleeping when her five year old son woke her up asking for water. It was very hot, so once up she decided to go to the balcony to get some fresh area. The sky was beautiful, without any clouds and full of stars. That is when she notices a strange light - it left her stunned.

She run back into the bedroom and grabbed her mobile phone and managed to film it.

The whole thing lasted about five minutes.

When she spoke to friends and family about it they initially laughed - but after they saw the film they began having doubts.

This is not the first time similar accounts were given from Basilicata and Puglia and there are several films on YouTube that show a light behaving in the same way Maria describes.

Have you ever noticed something like this?

UFO Sightings in Basilicata

First of all, I am someone who firmly believes that we have been visited by aliens, at least in the past. However, I'll just recount something that happened to me about 10 or more years ago. I was driving along in the narrow lanes of South Devon one night, when I passed a field in which a light came down vertically out of the clouds. It seemed very unusual, to say the least, and I wondered if I was witnessing an alien landing. However, not being a total cloud fairy, I felt there was probably another explanation, except that I just didn't know what it was. I got out and had a closer look in the field, and there seemed to be a fainter trail of light coming from up ahead, in the direction we were driving, so I suggested to my passenger that we try to follow the light to see where it was coming from, and we drove and drove through the lanes, and the light seem to be going to just ahead of us all the time. Eventually we arrived at a point overlooking Torquay, from about 2-3 miles out, and the answer was instantly revealed. It was someone shining laser lights up into the sky. They must have been bouncing off the cloud vapour, and eventually created the illusion that there were lights coming out of the clouds directly into the field where I had originally seen them. So, might I suggest that this may also have been someone shining lights of some kind into clouds (presuming there were some clouds, or maybe even just fine whispy clouds). The lights I saw travelled, I would guess, about 7 miles. The same night, people on Dartmoor claimed to have seen similar lights, and that would have been an additional 7-10 miles or so away ... so it is obvious that lights being shone into clouds can travel long distances before they may be viewed by puzzled onlookers. This may be an explanation ... besides which, any aliens jumping around the way those lights on the video were, would be suffering from flying sickness!
