A small child and the mayor, in a small town on the Calabrian coast with few other inhabitants, where it is even hard to rustle up a football team, are the central characters of Wim Wenders new film on immigration in Calabria.
The town's fate changes whern a boat of immigrants arrives from the sea - and generates debate about how they should be treated and/or accepted.
This is a short film, that the German director Wim Wenders will film in Calabria this September - based on a collection of true stories and situations that have developed in the small tows of Badolato, Locride, Riace, Caulonia and Stignano. In many cases the inhabitants of these towns they have chosen to help the integration of the immigrants - populating entire abandoned towns - towns that were emptied because of the Calabrians emigrating to the North of Italy or to countries like Germany and the USA.
This is an interesting film to present at a time where Italy seems harsher than ever in its treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers - a human story of solidarity in a place that has much less to offer than the rich towns of the North of Italy.
For Wim Wenders this is also a chance to return to South Italy - which he has visited often and is very fond of- the last time two years ago in Palermo to film Shooting. The current film - to be called "Il Volto" - will be shot in 3D which is probably the few times that a non-science fiction or horror film is down with this technique.

Il Volto
Hi Mary, very interested to read your comments about Calabria & the South in general, we couldn't agree more with you about this area being over looked, & you know in a way long may it continue. We moved to Calabria just over two yrs ago, the people are so welcoming, we very rarely have to buy fresh things (fruit, Salad eggs etc) & they always have a smile for you, despite it being a poor region (Define poor). So good luck to you & your family Mary, & if you fancy a glass or two please get in contact. Looking forward to the film Wim & thanks for thinking of us poor people here in the South, with our sunshine, wine, figs, N'duja.
Buona Giornata Tutti
Nice film!
I'd love to watch this film. I've seen the review of it http://www.tubesfan.com/watch/presentato-in-calabria-il-film-di-wenders-... but in Italian. In my opinion it is interesting of for two reasons: the first one is that one can learn more about the history of Calambria , and the next reason is that one should see what impact can have a man on community and town.
Film, "Il Volto"
I am very thankful to be subscribing to the "Italy Newsletter." I enjoy it, the manner in which it is written, and gives me my "Italy fix." I am so happy to hear of a film centered on the south of Italy, an area which is overlooked. In my search for a region to make my permanent home, my husband and I chose Calabria. In July we purchased a two bedroom home in Praia A Mare, on the west coast of Calabria. We plan on moving there to live all year round in the near future. We did, however, have the pleasure of visiting beautiful Badolato. I am so pleased to see that it is one of the focuses of the film. I plan on seeing the film and thank you for letting us know.
