Trieste may be new heroin traffiking hub
In two days police here have seized 177kg of heroin imported from Afghanistan leading investigators to believe that this Adriatic port city may be becoming a new hub for illegal drug trafficking.
On Tuesday, 110kg of heroin were found in a secret compartment in the cab of a truck which had arrived from Afghanistan, via Ankara.
After arresting the driver, police said the drugs had a street value of some 60 million euros.
Another 67kg of Afghan heroin were discovered on Thursday in the new free port area of the harbour.
These drugs had a market value of no less than 30 milllion euros.
Police would give no further details because they said their investigation was still in progress.
