Granny stars on Sicily radio

A 90-year-old granny has become a radio star on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

Rosina Costina has a regular Saturday slot dispensing traditional recipes and wisdom.

Nicknamed 'Granny Rosa DJ', Costina says she is ''surprised by the amount of fan mail I get''.

Her show, called 'Granny Rosa's Tagliatelle', is one of the staples of the weekend fare on Radio Delta Lampedusa.

On a recent show she entertained listeners with a story of a WWII incident when she was knocked out by the blast from an Allied bomb.

''I was in a coma for three months but I just got on with things after that,'' she said.

Costina, who has ten children and 22 grandchildren, says she loves being a radio performer.

''I prefer being with young people. Coming here on a Saturday gives me a buzz...The things I say come from the heart and when they come out I feel better,'' she told local daily La Sicilia.

Hooray for Granny Rosa! I

Hooray for Granny Rosa! I think it's wonderful she has her own radio show and I'm glad it's popular. Too bad I'm not in Lampedusa, I'd love to listen to her show. Much love and respect - Caroline.
