Saracens and Normans Battle Re-enactment

Start Date: 31 May, 2008 - End Date: 1 June 2008The medieval battle between Christians and Muslims in 1091 is re-enacted in Scicli's main square every year.
The Festa delle Milizie celebrates the victory of Christian soldiers guided by King Ruggero over Muslim soldiers led by the Emir Belkar, to gain control of the city. Legend has it that the apparition of a Madonna warrior on horseback protected the Christians, ensuring their victory. King Ruggero built a church to honour the Madonna delle Milizie, or Madonna of the war.
While the highlight of the festivities is the battle, other events include a horse race and the arrival of numerous believers from nearby towns to participate in the procession. A small street market offers the chance to acquire local handicrafts or simply try the delicious food.
