Police on Tuesday charged the mayor of a small Sicilian town after they discovered a baboon being kept in captivity in the municipal park.

Luca Gervasi, the mayor of Buseto Palizzolo, was charged with the illegal detention of a dangerous animal.

Police said the baboon was in good condition but the council did not have the necessary authorisation to keep it.
