TURIN 2008 WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL
The City of Turin was nominated First World Capital of Design for 2008 by the Industrial Design World Organization. This is an important acknowledgement not just for the city but for the entire Region of Piedmont: for its strong industrial tradition always on the cutting edge of innovation and for its research in the field. Throughout the year, more than 180 events are planned, in Turin and beyond, divided into four sections: Public Design, Economy and Design, Education and Design, Design Policies. As World Design Capital, Turin is called upon to represent Italy and its culture and tradition in the field of design and engineering as well as the creativity of the Made in Italy brand on the international stage. www.torinoworlddesigncapital.it

PALLADIO’S 500TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
Vicenza and other cities in the Veneto Andrea Palladio is one of the greatest artists of the 16th century. Palladio's beautiful villas are recognized all around the world for its beauty and in 1994 were put on the UNESCO World Heritage List. To celebrate the 500th birthday of his great artist, the enchanting city of Vicenza will offer different art exhibitions all along 2008. Masterpieces of Michelangelo, Sansovino, Tintoretto, Van Dyck, Canaletto and many other original hand signed drawings will complete this unique art event. THE SURGEON’S HOUSE IN RIMINI
A new important archaeological site has been opened to the public in the seaside resort of Rimini on the Adriatic Riviera, The House of the Surgeon. The house was built in the 2nd century A.C.and belonged to a surgeon. A collection of surgical instruments is on show in the Rimini Archaeological Musem, while on site one can admire frescos and splendid mosaics. www.domusrimini.com

PUCCINI CELEBRATIONS IN TORRE DEL LAGO PUCCINI
In 2008 Torre del Lago Puccini near Lucca is the focus of an extraordinary programme of events celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Puccini. The main event will be the inauguration of the New Open Air Grand Theatre in the Sculpture and Music Park. This new theatre is enclosed in large green areas with lake Massacciucoli as its backdrop. Both inside, in the grand foyer, and outside it will exhibit works of sculptors and painters, as part of the ‘Scolpire l’opera’ a project which combines the works of the greatest contemporary artists with the immortal music of Giacomo Puccini. In summer there will be the 54th Puccini Festival with performances of : Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Turandot and Edgar. www.puccinifestival.it
