The carnival starts at the end of January and the “Mamuthones” (traditional masquerades) show themselves in public for the first time. The festival reaches its climax on Shrove Tuesday, when the masquerades continue their show until midnight. During the celebrations, women and children cook lard and beans in large pans and distribute them to all present with a glass of wine.
