My kidney for a job

An unemployed man from Friuli-Venezia Giulia placed an advertisement on the internet offering one of his kidneys in exchange for €100,000 or a job.

The advertisement was immediately removed by the Postal and Communications Police, who initially thought it was a joke. However, upon investigation, they discovered the human tragedy that lay behind the placing of the advertisement:

The man, who has not been named, had a prestigious job in a private company until a year ago, when he lost it.
At 52 and in the current economic situation, he was unable to find other work and this led to the break-up of his marriage.

His wife and two children, who are students, remained in the marital home while the man lived in rented accommodation. However, he found it difficult to pay the rent and has been living in circumstances of real hardship. His friends abandoned him and finally, in desperation, he placed the advertisement.

Sadly, this is not an isolated case of such desperation. In an investigation, Corriere della Sera found ninety similar advertisements on one Italian site alone.

Amazing coincidence. My son

Amazing coincidence. My son Martin is giving a kidney to a friend in September. FREE of course. A young mother from his church has been on dialysis for two years, waiting for a donor. Her husband's kidney is not compatible. When my son heard this, he immediately offered to help. He is 50 and single. Has a solid job. He had a broken heart once, and although he has many social friends, has no plan to marry soon. He was thoroughly investigated physically, emotionally, financially. And he fits the bill. People ask me what do I think about this. I answer that he didn't ask my permission. And I'm very glad he didn't. I might have told him not to do it. If he had listened, and that young woman had died, I would have felt terribly guilty. As it is, I'm impressed by the deed. But I don't glorify him. Neither does he expect any special treatment from anyone. In a way, it's a bit like sharing a "surplus" with someone who has nothing.

Interesting story, Pat. I'll send Martin to it.
