Montepulciano is renown for its impressive renaissance buildings, for the elegant beauty of its churches and for its Vino Nobile, one of the Tuscany's most appreciated wines around the world. The urban centre spreads along a course that climbs the hill reaching the central square, Piazza Grande, which is on its the top. During the beautiful days it is possible to see, from the Val di Chiana side, distant mountain ranges like the Catria, the Sibillini, the Cimone, the highest peaks of the Gran Sasso and, beyond the pre-appennine summits, Perugia, the Subasio mountain and Assisi; from the other side, the Monte Amiata, the Val d'Orcia Pienza, Monticchiello and in the distance, on clear days, Siena's towers. Downstream of the Apennines it is possible to see the long stretch of the Trasimeno Lake with its islands, and the two lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi. From here are reachable other historical towns such as Pienza 12 km or San Casciano dei Bagni 35km and the motorway, only 24 km far, connect the town with cities like Rome and Florence.
