Description

The beautiful old church of S. Maria del Belriguardo is situated on the south eastern plateau of Sareano, above the green planted terraces on the extreme edge of the Val di Chiana. From this enchanting position the wonderful views stretch as far as the Umbrian Appennine mountains and Lake Tresimeno and onwards to the mountains of Cimino. The oldest recorded record of this church is 25th July 1556 but it is believed that an Etruscan temple was originally built on this site which was transformed in the roman period into a circular temple, as this was the popular shape of architecture of the time, and then it was consecrated into a christian church and dedicated to Mary. There are remnants of the Etruscan temple to be found in the museum at Chiusi. There is no trace of the roman temple. The church has many tall windows which means it is particularly bright inside. The building has a considerable height. The building has enormous potential to be restored and transformed into a very interesting residence. There is also the possibility of buying nearby land on which to create a garden.
