Don’t Worry if it Rains

In Sicily, on the day before the wedding, the tradition of the conzata del letto still exists when two single girlfriends of the bride (symbols of virginity and purity) make up the wedding bed. The sheets must be pure white. The mothers of the couple symbolically put pasta, oil, fruit and money on the bed to attract all kinds of good luck.

The Day of the Wedding

The wedding takes place in the morning, leaving the rest of the day for celebrating! The bride and groom must not leave anything behind in the house as once outside they can’t turn back.

The bride mustn’t look at herself in her wedding dress in the mirror on the day of the wedding. If she really can’t resist then she must remove a shoe, an earring or a glove. In church, watch the rings! They mustn’t be allowed to drop!

The Ritual of the Rice

On leaving the church the bride and groom are welcomed by being showered with white rice – this will ensure the couple’s prosperity. In the Sorrentine peninsula, they also throw confetti mixed with coins. In this region, the bouquet has to be given by the bride’s future mother-in-law. The bride reciprocates by giving her an olive branch to avoid arguments. After the ceremony, it’s off to the reception! The cars line up and start hooting their horns in the belief that this will drive away any evil spirits.

The Reception

In Tuscany, this is the time to give the floor to traditional folk singers who sing improvised songs for the couple, not forgetting to tease and make faces at the parents and the family, but on this day noone minds, they prefer to laugh it off.

Sugared Almonds

The almonds should be white, an odd number (usually five) and are given so the couple will never lack life’s necessities: health, fertility, long life, happiness and wealth. Tradition says that the couple move around the tables after the cutting of the cake. The groom holds a silver tray of sugared almonds and the bride hands them out to guests in odd numbers. The first night of the honeymoon is always spent in the new house in a new bed and of course the couple have to look out for all the silly practical jokes their friends have created in their new home!

La sposa non deve guardarsi allo specchio con il vestito il giorno del matrimonio. Se proprio non resiste lo può fare ma togliendo una scarpa, un orecchino o un guanto. In chiesa attenzione alle fedi! Non fatele cadere!

Il Rito del Riso

All’uscita dalla Chiesa gli sposi sono accolti con lanci di riso bianco: questo assicurerà prosperità alla coppia. Nella penisola sorrentina, si tirano anche confetti misti a monete. In questa regione, il bouquet deve essere regalato dalla futura suocera. La sposa ricambia regalando un rametto d’ulivo per evitare discordie. Dopo la cerimonia, via verso il ricevimento! Le macchine si incolonnano e cominciano a suonare festosamente i clacson: la convinzione è che cosi facendo si mettono in fuga gli spiriti cattivi.

Il Ricevimento

In Toscana, è il momento per dare il via ai vecchi “stornellatori” che cantano rime ad hoc per i futuri sposi.. non mancano sfottò e sberleffi ai genitori e alla famiglia, ma in questa giornata nessuno ci fa caso, e si preferisce riderci su!

I Confetti/Le Bomboniere

Bianchi e in numero dispari (di solito cinque), per rappresentare le qualità della vita che non devono mancare: salute, fertilità, lunga vita, felicità, ricchezza. La tradizione prevede che la coppia di sposi giri tra i tavoli dopo il taglio della torta. Lo sposo reggerà un vassoio d’argento con i confetti, la sposa li servirà agli invitati in numero dispari. La prima notte di nozze è rigorosamente nella casa nuova e nel nuovo letto, sempre che gli sposi riescano a superare le difficoltà create goliardicamente dagli amici nella nuova casa!
